WHEREAS, Gwinnett County hosts the largest Relay For Life event in the world. Of more than 5,500 Relay events held around the globe, Gwinnett continually leads all others in attendance and fundraising; and

WHEREAS, The City of Suwanee has a proud tradition of participation and passionate support of this program; and

WHEREAS, More than $33 million has been raised by the Gwinnett Relay over its 23 year history; and

WHEREAS, This year marks the inaugural Paint Gwinnett Purple Week, a celebration recognizing Gwinnett’s cancer survivors. Residents and businesses throughout the county will decorate and wear purple leading up to the 2016 Relay, which is being held on Friday, May 13 through Saturday, May 14, at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds; and

WHEREAS, Paint Gwinnett Purple Week will serve as an excellent reminder that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten and that those who face cancer will always be supported. It is a new tradition that will no doubt be proudly celebrated for many years to come.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, James M. Burnette, Jr., as Mayor of the City of Suwanee, along with my fellow Councilmembers, do proclaim May 8 – 13, 2016 as Paint Gwinnett Purple Week. I commend all of those who participate in Relay For Life and encourage the community to Paint Gwinnett Purple.
