Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College
One of the most unique bachelor”s degrees in America will be available at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College when fall semester classes begin on Aug. 17. Students who enroll in the new Rural Studies bachelor”s degree program can choose from three different areas of concentration including Rural Business and Economic Development, Rural Arts and Culture, and Rural Community and Social Affairs. Graduates of the program might find careers with private sector organizations that deal with rural issues, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Other possibilities include historic preservation, rural history, rural sociology, global studies, journalism, or public administration.
Agnes Scott College
With four Fulbrights, two Goldwaters, one Truman and a Kemper, Agnes Scott students and a 2008 graduate have earned an unprecedented number of national scholarships during the 2008-2009 academic year.
"We always expect to do well with our efforts to secure a notable number of national scholarships," Agnes Scott President Elizabeth Kiss said recently. "But this year I believe we”ve outdone ourselves. This clearly represents unprecedented performance. This is an Agnes Scott superlative."
Three Fulbright Scholars from Agnes Scott will serve as assistant English teachers in various parts of the world. Kelley Bledsoe of Arlington, Va., class of 2009 in Taiwan; Linnette Franco of Lawrenceville, Ga., class of 2008 in Spain and Sarah Mecholsky of Gainesville, Fla., class of 2009 in Indonesia. A fourth Fulbright scholar, Molly Roza of Roseville, Calif., class of 2009, will conduct research in modern history in Austria.
Fulbright Scholars participate in the U.S. government”s flagship international educational exchange program designed to "promote a better understanding of the United States in other countries and to increase mutual understanding," according to the mission of the Smith-Mundt Act passed by Congress in 1948, which established the founding principles for what later became the Fulbright Program.
