It”s not a coincidence that our favorite summer water holes around Gwinnett are all taverns. Since the Middle Ages, the local tavern has been the best place to find food, drink and catch up on what”s happening. In the middle of summer, here are a few places to gather the crew and get together for some fun.

Big Creek Tavern – Buford
Around these parts, you can”t make a mistake hanging out at the lake in the summer. For boaters and land dwellers alike, Big Creek is a great place to go for real people, really good food and cheap beer. There”s also live music and DJ entertainment that can get folks up on their feet. Don”t let its looks deceive you, this is one of the best places to hang out with your friends and have some summertime fun. Just remember, what happens at the lake stays at the lake.

The Iron Horse Tavern – Norcross
If iced cold beer is your way to beat the heat, find a night to stop by The Iron Horse in historic downtown Norcross. This quaint English pub – located in a 130 year-old building – offers a whole lot of atmosphere. From 12 beers on draft, to wooden floors and exposed brick walls, this is a real tavern complete with darts, pool table and live entertainment. There”s a large import and domestic bottled beer menu, and a great patio filled with over-sized umbrellas, fresh flowers and herbs, and lots of locals with their dogs.

Marlow”s Tavern – Duluth
Do Georgia Peach Juleps, Fresh Blueberry Mojitos or Cherry Lime-ades whet your whistle? If so, head for Marlow”s Tavern. This fashionable neighborhood gathering spot is filled with locals and the patio is the perfect spot in the summer. Sip from Marlow”s signature martini menu, cool off with a classic cocktail or special wine cellar selection. There”s also a good list of local and regional micro-brew beers. Don”t miss the late night fun and live entertainment, and Girls Night Out specials every Wednesday.

McCray”s Tavern on the Square – Lawrenceville
Braves games are live in HD at McCray”s, but best of all in summer is the rooftop patio. There, overlooking the historic Lawrenceville Square, you can kick back for a while with a Pineapple or Mango Martini, Grape Nehi or Long Island Iced Tea. In addition to 45 beers on tap, there”s also everything from prime rib to traditional pub fare on the menu. Late night you can find a place at the bar and hang out with your best buds, or meet a few new ones.

Old Towne Tavern & Grille – Suwanee
If you”re bringing the whole family, this is your best bet. Overlooking the beautiful Town Center Park, Old Towne boasts Gwinnett”s only outside bar. Besides offering variety of great food – a truly "something for everyone" menu – it”s also a really good value. Known for bogo specials on pizza (Tuesdays) and wings (Wednesdays), this great neighborhood gathering spot has refreshingly good service. Olde Towne is a cozy place with familiar faces that promises a good time watching the game or catching up with friends.
