Heroes Project Update: Alan Sims
Alan Sims has exciting news to report! Since we last visited with our 2009 Hero, the acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivor and sports manic was able to play his first season of football with the BFA”s nine year-old team as a safety and running back. Alan”s advice – “It”s good to eat healthy foods when you don”t want to because they make you feel better and when you feel better, you play better.”#
Alan had his chemotherapy port removed in January 2010 and finished his last medicine in July 2010. He will continue to receive regular checkups for the next year to make sure things are going well, but so far, so good!
Alan is a local advocate for childhood cancer. He and his family participate annually in Gwinnett”s Relay For Life. He also is part of the Childhood Cancer Crusaders Group, which completed a book in September titled Inside Childhood Cancer: a journey through the lives of the children and their families. Alan”s chapter is titled Born 2 Finish Strong.
He has also gained attention from the local Atlanta news station, 11Alive. The station completed a segment on him this past September through the CURE program in honor of childhood cancer awareness month. And, on September 10, Alan raised a total of $2,003 at his brother”s high school football game towards cancer awareness.
