Gwinnett Medical Center Hosts Interactive, Free Heart Health Expo

heart beatIn celebration of National Heart Month, Gwinnett Medical Center (GMC) will host “Get Heart Smart – An interactive heart health expo”# on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Gwinnett Center. This event is free and features a complimentary heart-healthy breakfast, onsite educational and fitness classes, discounted medical screenings and heart health inspired giveaways including iPods and local gym memberships.

Guests are invited to jumpstart their heart-healthy lifestyle by attending educational classes led by GMC experts, with topics such as fitness, nutrition, stress management and sleep. Classes led by certified fitness instructors, including Pilates, Cardio Dance, Yoga and Zumba, are available throughout the event. Discounted medical screenings ($15 each) are available by appointment only and must be made prior to the event.

“Each year we hold this event because maintaining heart health is one key to well-being at any age,”# said Dolores Ware, director of marketing and community relations. “We hope this expo inspires our community to take great care of their hearts.”#

To raise awareness of National Heart Month, GMC”s Strickland Heart Center is sponsoring a heart-healthy cooking contest during the February 9 event. Participants can watch as local firefighters and GMC associates prepare heart-healthy meals to compete for the prize of “best-tasting, heart-smart dish.”#

“Our goal is to provide everything you would need to jumpstart your heart-healthy lifestyle all in one place,”# added Ware. “Whether it”s through new information, interactive fitness classes or screenings that help gauge current health status, we want the expo to provide our community with real solutions for becoming even more heart smart.”#
