Gwinnett Magazine Heroes Project 2016: Laverne Huggins

“95% of your healing and recovery is based on your attitude.”
– Laverne Huggins

LaverneFive years ago Laverne Huggins had her very first mammogram at the age of 42 and learned she had cancer. Huggins is from Saint Kitts and Nevis (two-island country in the West Indies) and her family still lives there. She called her sister and asked her to tell her mother for her. “I didn’t want to transmit worry and fear to them,” she said.

“At first I was numb and I cried, then I prayed. I knew I couldn’t worry about the cancer, that makes it worse. I believe 95% of your healing and recovery is based on your attitude.”

“I had a complete mastectomy and the cancer had not spread so I did not have to have radiation or chemo. I was relieved but I felt guilty.”

“The support group had suffered so much and experienced so much loss. I felt like I just got a slap on a wrist. My support group told me not to feel that way because having cancer is never the same for anyone.”
