Gwinnett Magazine Heroes Project 2016: Stephanie Cann

“I live out loud with joy and purpose every day.”
– Stephanie Cann

StephanieNine years ago, Stephanie Cann was diagnosed with gestational choriocarcinoma after the birth of her fourth child. She says, “It’s a miracle Caleb survived. The cancer had been feeding off his blood and placenta during the final stage of my pregnancy.”

In the two months between Caleb’s birth and Stephanie’s diagnosis, the cancer covered her uterus and spread into her lungs. Treatments included an emergency hysterectomy followed by four months of chemo before she was declared free
of cancer.

But her journey with cancer didn’t end there. Exactly one year later, Stephanie’s cancer was back. She says, “I remember thinking, OK God, you clearly aren’t done with me yet.” In March 2016, Stephanie celebrated seven years of being cancer-free.

Stephanie’s family, friends, and neighbors provided much needed support. She says, “I learned to let people help—accepting their offers of assistance was as much a blessing to them as it was to me. My immense support system loved me through cancer and my faith gave me the gift of joy. I’m not taking one day for granted.”
