Heroes Project Update: Caitlin Donahue
Caitlin Donahue, a seventh grader at Creekland Middle School, is celebrating her fifth year off chemotherapy and her seventh year cancer free. Our 2009 Hero battled acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2003. Now an energetic kid, she plays basketball and takes piano lessons.
Caitlin also enjoys running and will participate in several 5K races this year. One that she is looking forward to is the 5K Lauren”s Run, hosted by CURE childhood cancer, this May.
Caitlin and her family”s advice for families that have children with cancer is to, “take advantage of the numerous programs available to you.” Their family recommends Camp Sunshine, CURE and The Lighthouse Retreats. These programs are run with the help of volunteers – many of whom have been touched by cancer themselves.
“We have received so much love and support through these organizations – it takes my breath away to think about it,” says Caitlin”s mother, Irene Donahue. She encourages families to not be afraid to ask for help from friends and family. “Many people want to do something to help but don”t know how to ask, so let them know what you need.”
