Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has begun the school district”s process to name the four new schools scheduled to open in August of 2015.

The school system invites Gwinnett community members and organizations to participate in the school naming process by providing their input.

Opening in 2015:

  • New Berkmar/Central Gwinnett Relief Cluster Elementary – 2136 Old Norcross Road in Lawrenceville

  • New Berkmar/Central Gwinnett Relief Cluster High – 1335 Old Norcross Road in Lawrenceville

  • New Central Gwinnett Cluster MS – 8 Village Way in Lawrenceville

  • New Meadowcreek Cluster Elementary – 1700 Graves Road in Norcross

Suggestions from the public will be gathered by school naming committees which have been formed within the cluster where the new school will be built. All committees include one school staff member and one parent and/or community member from each school in the area of the new school. These committees will develop a list of recommended names to submit to the superintendent. The committee recommendations take into account available research and follow the school system”s policy for naming new facilities.

In making their recommendations, the committees give consideration to:

  • Individuals who have made a significant social contribution (If an individual”s name is proposed, only the last name would be considered the official name.)

  • Names of communities served by the school

  • Roads

  • Landmarks

  • Geographical locations in the proximity of the school

Information on how to submit names for consideration, along with the necessary form, can be found on the school system”s web site at Forms also are available at the local schools within the clusters where the new schools will be built. (The new Meadowcreek Cluster ES forms are available at Nesbit ES. Forms for the proposed middle school in the Central Gwinnett Cluster are available at Richards MS. Those interested in picking up a form for the new Berkmar/Central Gwinnett Relief Cluster ES can do so at Benefield ES. And forms for the new relief high school for the Berkmar/Central Gwinnett area can be found at both Berkmar HS and Central Gwinnett HS.) The deadline to submit public input on potential names for the new schools is September 9, 2014.

The school naming committees will review and submit their recommendations to CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks on September 12.

Wilbanks will review the recommendations and submit his recommendation to the School Board for its consideration at the scheduled meeting on September 18, 2014.
