Dr. ShrakeDr. Philip Shrake Provides Local Cancer Patients with Innovative Treatments Options

Dr. Philip Shrake at Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia in Lawrenceville has provided Gwinnett patients access to the best cancer care for 15 years. “At my practice, we treat many different kinds of diseases, but we”re experts in treating cancer, such as breast, colorectal, head and neck, prostate, lung, lymphoma, and skin,”# he says.

As a community-based physician, Dr. Shrake strives to utilize the most advanced technology in the treatment of his patients, especially for lung cancer. “Lung cancer can be difficult to treat, but fortunately new innovations in radiotherapy are making it easier for us to target lung tumors,”# says Shrake. These innovations include the use of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for individuals with early lung cancer. “Traditionally, early non-small cell lung cancer has been treated by removing the patient”s lung or a portion of the lung through surgery with a scalpel. However with SABR, patients who can”t endure a large surgical procedure, like the frail, elderly and those with poor lung function, can use this treatment option.”#

SABR is a convenient, non-invasive method that delivers focused beams of high-dose radiation given within three to five treatment visits. This differs from conventional radiation, which consists of daily treatments for over a six to seven week period. “SABR has changed lung cancer treatment in a big way and presents a huge advantage in a patient”s success rate. However, even though it”s a cutting-edge treatment we offer in Gwinnett, not every patient is a good candidate for SABR. At our office, we suggest the most appropriate treatment method for each patient on a case-by-case basis,”# says Dr. Shrake.

Understanding that a cancer diagnosis can leave a patient feeling uneasy, Dr. Shrake and his team believe in arming their patients with information to alleviate some of their anxiety. “We provide the full spectrum of compassionate care, from nursing assistance to nutrition specifics, massage therapy to support groups and educational seminars. Our team is highly trained to educate and guide patients during each step of their care.”#
