For those suffering from unsightly, deformed or discolored toenails, symptomatic of toenail fungus (onychomycosis), help is on the way. Village Podiatry Centers, the largest foot and ankle surgical practice in the Southeast, introduces Cutera”s GenesisPlus, a revolutionary, non-invasive laser therapy treatment for nail fungus.
Known medically as onychomycosis, nail fungus affects approximately 30 million Americans. Those coping with the condition often find it embarrassing to live with and difficult to treat with topical or oral remedies. Hence laser treatment is a welcome solution in the fight against this stubborn condition. The GenesisPlus laser has been demonstrated to clear nails of mild and severe forms of fungus, ultimately improving the appearance of the nails, without the unpleasant side effects of conventional treatments.
“Topical treatments alone are generally unable to clear the nail because of insufficient nail plate penetration,”# says Dr. Anthony Gatti, a board-certified podiatric medicine provider. Dr. Gatti points out that “current treatment protocols with oral medication have limited success rates and are often associated with adverse side effects, including gastrointestinal and skin disorders, headaches and abnormal liver function. GenesisPlus laser therapy is a safe, effective alternative to achieve clearer, healthier-looking nails.”#
In a typical 30-minute GenesisPlus laser session, laser energy is applied to the nail plate and surrounding tissue. The laser light gradually heats the fungus and promotes the growth of healthy, clear nails. GenesisPlus laser treatment does not require any anesthetics and patients can resume normal daily activities without any downtime or unpleasant side effects.
Village Podiatry Centers offers GenesisPlus laser treatment in their laser center, on the medical campus of St. Joseph”s Hospital: 5673 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd., Suite 470 in Atlanta.

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails. Most commonly found in toenails, onychomycosis causes the nail to become discolored, thickened and separated from the nail bed. If left untreated, the condition can cause toenails to become so thick that they press against the inside of shoes, causing pressure, irritation and pain. Onychomycosis is the cause of half of all nail disorders and it is the most common nail disease in adults. Approximately half of the population will have at least one infected toenail during the course of their lives. The incidence of onychomycosis has been increasing, owing to such factors as diabetes, immunosuppression and increasing age.
