Gwinnett County celebrates National County Government Month this month to highlight essential county government services and programs it provides to those who live, work and play here. The county is observing this year”s theme of Healthy Counties, Healthy Families with many free and fun events throughout the month of April. Most of the activities are designed to help residents learn about healthy living choices.

In addition, the county will host a supply drive throughout the month to collect hygiene and cleaning items for Gwinnett”s needy seniors and children.

Upcoming National County Government Month events include:

Earth Day Celebration with Solid Waste and Recovered Materials – April 14
Come celebrate Earth Day with the Gwinnett County Solid Waste and Recovered Materials Division from noon to 2 p.m. at Coolray Field, home of the Gwinnett Braves. This free event will feature paper shredding, household battery and paint collection (limit 5 one-gallon cans per vehicle; dried-up paint is acceptable) kids” activities, and more!

Volunteer Appreciation Week – April 15 – April 21
National Volunteer Week is about celebrating and recognizing the amazing contributions our volunteers make every day to keep Gwinnett County the best place to live, work, play, and volunteer! To learn more about Volunteer Gwinnett, visit

Care-A-Van Mammogram Screenings – April 16
The Gwinnett Medical Center Care-A-Van will be at the Grayson Library beginning at 8:15 a.m. to provide mammogram screenings. Please call 678-312-3444 to schedule an appointment.

Walk-A-Weigh Fitness and Nutrition – April 19 – April 24
Join the Cooperative Extension Service for exercise and to learn healthy cooking and eating habits. Cost for classes is $13 (exact amount in cash) for six weeks. The class will be held at the Centerville Community Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To pre-register for classes, call the Centerville Community Center at 770-985-4713.

Earth Day with the Environmental and Heritage Center – April 21
The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center celebrates the wonders of our Earth on Earth Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.! There will be a variety of educational activities, nature hikes, crafts, movies, and games to help honor this amazing planet of ours.

Reducing Energy Density – April 25
Learn what energy density is, what makes a food higher in energy density, and how foods with high or low energy density affect your weight. Recipe demonstration: Fresh spinach salad. To Health – Sing, Dance, and Relax Health Fair – April 27
This health fair will feature line dancing classes, beneficial health screenings, and healthy cooking demonstrations. Come join us from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at George Pierce Park Community Recreation Center.
