Charlie”s Story of Giving

In October of 2010, my church, Cannon United Methodist Church celebrated their 7th year of “The Spooky to be Hungry”# campaign that helps fill the shelves of the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op Ministry. Although my family has donated to this cause each year, I felt compelled last fall to personally become more active in this endeavor. Hearing stories in past years of how families in need were supplied with everyday items such as food, cleaning supplies, diapers, baby formula, and through monetary donations even being able to keep their family warm truly touched my heart. Therefore, I wanted to answer the call to represent my neighborhood and deliver “The Spooky to be Hungry”# bags to the more than 100 homes in the Downs Neighborhood.

The letter attached to the bags informed my neighbors about how in each of the previous two months over 28,000 items had been received by families in need from the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op and that their shelves were almost bare. I was hopeful on the following Saturday morning as I started down the first street to see how many people would respond to this great cause. I was truly amazed as porch after porch had not only the bag I had left, but additional bags of food, toiletries, cleaning supplies and baby items, waiting for my arrival. I felt great as we not only filled the entire back of my Dad”s truck, but the inside as well. Then we had to fill the trunk and back seat of my Mom”s car too. I was grateful to my neighbors and very proud as we delivered all of the items to Cannon to be boxed and taken to the Co-op.

I looked around the sanctuary at all of the boxes and bags of food and knew that in a small way I had helped make a difference. I know that from now on I will try to find or make opportunities to do things like this to help my community be a better place and let others know that I care.## – Charlie Briscoe
