Gwinnett Humane Society Adoption Center Interior

Now open at The Avenue Webb Gin, the Gwinnett Humane Society is celebrating its adoption center move with a Crews Middle School poster contest.# Students were asked to design a “Pets are FURever”-themed poster to educate people that pets are family members too.# The top 10 finalists are currently on display at the adoption center, where the community can vote for the winning poster at events on April 9 and 16.

“The Humane Society of the United States estimates that between 6 to 8 million dogs and cats are cared for in shelters each year,”# said Cori Koleszar, secretary of the Gwinnett Humane Society. “And sadly, roughly half of these animals are euthanized and never have the chance to find forever homes.# We hope this contest builds awareness that helps us make a difference in these animals” lives.”#

Community members will have two chances to vote for their favorite design.# On April 9 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., the Humane Society is hosting Kid”s Pet Education Day, where dog trainer Cindy Flannery will show children cool tricks they can teach their dogs.# The next weekend, April 16, Gwinnett Humane Society will host its official grand opening, with children”s activities, door prizes, refreshments, a bake sale, and of course, adoptable animals.# Members of the community can cast their votes at each of these events.# The winner will be announced the following week, and will have his or her artwork used as a Gwinnett Humane Society T-shirt, which will be sold at PAWfest on May 7 in Tribble Mill Park in Lawrenceville. PAWfest is an annual family and pet festival featuring children”s activities, dog contests, a silent auction and more.

“The Gwinnett Humane Society is a pivotal nonprofit in our community, and we are proud the organization chose to move its adoption headquarters here,”# said Megan Jurkovic, marketing manager of The Avenue Webb Gin.# “This contest will motivate students to be creative while helping them learn how to contribute to their community.”#
