Peachtree Corners is celebrating the ground breaking of its new town center and a few raindrops couldn’t dampen their enthusiasm! The 21-acre mixed used development is expected to open in the fall of 2018 and will be the heart of the city.
On the eve of celebrating its 5th anniversary, the City of Peachtree Corners marked another pivotal occasion – the groundbreaking of its new town center. Over 50 guests braved the rain to celebrate the beginning of the town center which will serve as a gathering place for this city of some 40,000 residents.
The event for the 21-acre mixed-use development was Friday, June 30 at 2 p.m. and took place on a site adjacent to the traffic circle near the intersection of Peachtree Parkway and Forum Drive.
The celebration represents a milestone for the young city that incorporated as Gwinnett County’s 16th city only five years ago. Constructed on one of the city’s only remaining undeveloped sizeable tracts of land on Peachtree Parkway, the $103 million project features anchor tenant Cinebistro, a high-end dinner and a movie theater, restaurants, retail shops, office space, townhomes and a 2-acre town green.
The property had been slated for a 270 garden-style apartment development before the city stepped in to purchase the property in 2013.
“We thought that the best use for this property would be one that would serve as a place that the community could enjoy,” said Mayor Mike Mason. “In our Livable Centers Initiative study, we asked our citizens what they would like to see on this centrally-located piece of property. An overwhelmingly majority said what the city needed was a place where they could come together as a community.”
And due to prudent financial management, the city will not carry any debt for the Town Center development.
“Citizens should be proud of their city that it was able to successfully undertake this large-scale project and do so while maintaining a zero property tax,” said City Manager Brian Johnson.
The 250,000 square-foot development includes over 70 high-end townhomes. The Town Green, designed as space for outdoor activities, includes an interactive water feature, open air pavilion, caf tables, fire pit, projection screen, open lawn, playable art, and community garden. A 3,000 square-foot veterans monument will also be featured on the Town Green and include seven sculptures donated by renowned sculptor, Chad Fisher.
“The Town Center and the 2-acre town green have been designed to be uniquely Peachtree Corners and are intended to become the heart of the city,” said Community Development Director Diana Wheeler.
The developer, Atlanta-based Fuqua Development, expects to have the Town Center open in the fall of 2018.
