Picture this. You’re 14 years old and starting your first day at the Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Technology (GSMST). You are no longer the big fish in a small pond. The high school looming before you seems like an ocean compared to your middle school. The seniors, who look more like giants than human beings, stomp through the halls excitedly chatting about their last year of high school. You look at them with envy and fascination. Everyone says the next four years will fly by. This is the time to find close friends, passions, and make memories. But how do you start on this path of self-discovery?
Attending GSMST is a lot different from attending a regular high school. Everyone comes from different Gwinnett County districts; there’s little chance that they’ll have classes with people they knew from middle school. Luckily, GSMST fosters a welcoming environment to get the students acclimated to the unique experience that GSMST offers. There, one freshman says that “everyone at school is really nice. They are all friendly and open.” Another new freshman remarks how difficult the course work is, but is excited to get involved in the school, volunteer and meet new people. The annual Inside Scoop has come around again at GSMST! At this event, students can learn about and sign up for any clubs they find interesting. Not only is it a great way for students to discover new clubs, but they also get free ice cream! Furthermore, the freshmen have a chance to meet upperclassman with whom they can build relationships.
All the club officers bring their enthusiasm and best anecdotes about specific events to attract new members. The Robotics Club brings out their flashiest robots to interest and attract the students interested in building robots and compete in competitions against the best of the best. Students who are interested in learning about how they can start a more eco-friendly lifestyle head over to the Environmental Club booth. The Relay For Life teams brings enthusiasm against the negatives of cancer that they continually work against by raising money for cancer research, victims, and survivors. The Inside Scoop presented many more clubs to the GSMST students and welcomed the new freshman into the GSMST community!
