Gwinnett County Police Department: To Protect & Serve
Could you defend yourself if attacked? Fending off a physical assault is a top concern for any woman – and the Gwinnett County Police Department is helping by teaching women how to defend themselves.
The R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) Basic Physical Defense Program is a 12-hour course for women 13 and older, taught by certified instructors with the Gwinnett Police Crime Prevention Unit. The Crime Prevention team offers a wide variety of classes to educate people about how to protect their community, their property, and themselves. The R.A.D. class covers basic safety skills such as avoiding risky situations, being aware of your surroundings, being prepared, and basic self-defense, and ends with a dynamic simulation where participants practice the skills they’ve learned.
Gwinnett officers have already taught 225 women these valuable tools and techniques. The class receives rave reviews and is one of the department’s most requested trainings.
“When women finish the class, they have heightened awareness and risk recognition, smart decision-making, and a sense of empowerment and confidence,” said Officer Joseph Brewer. “This training provides options for the best possible outcome.”
