Education Degree Added at Georgia Gwinnett College

Georgia Gwinnett College’s (GGC) School of Education has added a new bachelor’s degree program in middle grades education.

“This program fills a critical need for middle grades teachers in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), as well as the Atlanta region and elsewhere in Georgia,” said Dr. Cathy Moore, dean of the School of Education.

As with GGC’s existing programs in elementary education and special education, the middle grades program includes field experiences imbedded in many upper-level classes. Students in the program will complete a full year of student teaching. Georgia Gwinnett collaborates on student teacher field experiences and placements with GCPS, the largest employer of the college’s graduates in education.

Adding this program also supports the University System of Georgia’s efforts to provide qualified new teachers for the state’s school systems. This need is pronounced in Gwinnett County. The US Census shows that since 2010, Gwinnett County’s population has grown 12.6 percent while the rest of the state’s population has grown 6.4 percent For those under age 18, Gwinnett outpaces the rest of the state at 27 percent, and its population is greater than that of Georgia’s 76 least populated counties combined.

GGC’s School of Education prepares students to step immediately into their teaching careers, often in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS).
Integrated instruction ensures that GGC education students can effectively address all areas of the curriculum when they become teachers, while field-based courses give them extensive practice in a wide range of strategies for teaching and managing their classrooms.
Data-based decision-making enables GGC graduates to evaluate the quality of instruction and assess student progress.
A strong partnership with GCPS means GGC’s teacher education programs address the real-world needs of today’s teachers and schools.
