Ask anyone why they moved to Gwinnett and there’s one answer that’s always in the mix – outstanding schools and access to education at every level.

Gwinnett County Public Schools, Buford City Schools and many award winning private schools serve students for K-12.

Nationally-recognized Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is the largest school system in the state, and Gwinnett’s largest employer. Over 180,000 students attend 148 schools or educational facilities. There are 80 elementary schools, 29 middle schools, 21 high schools and 9 unique facilities serving the diverse interests and needs of students. GCPS is the two-time winner of The Broad Prize for Urban Education.

The City of Buford has its own excellent school system for citizens who live within the city limits there. The system has four schools – Elementary (K-1), Academy (2-5), Middle (6-8) and High School 9-12). The system is known for its academic achievements as well as championship level sports.

In the private school sector, Gwinnett comes up a winner too. Greater Atlanta Christian, Hebron Academy, Riverside Military, Providence Christian and Wesleyan are just a few of the outstanding private schools in our community.

Last year, the Gwinnett County Board of Education revised its Core Beliefs and Commitments, restating its pledge to provide a world-class education that meets the needs of each individual student. In providing context for this commitment, the Board connected its belief in public education to foundational documents and principles of the United States of America, calling public education “an integral part of the seamless fabric of the American experience.”

While the Board’s Core Beliefs and Commitments refer specifically to ideas espoused in the Declaration of Independence, a number of foundational principles are found in the U.S. Constitution. This document stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to declare and maintain their liberties, freedoms, and unalienable rights. We teach about the Constitution and the laws of our nation throughout the school year, but special emphasis is given in September during Constitution Week, when we celebrate the document that is the basis for America’s great heritage and way of life.

At this time, when our country has been battered by Mother Nature and the political climate too often turns contentious, it is good to review the opening words of the Constitution_ “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union_”. Two of those words- “more perfect”- refer to the delegates’ task of perfecting the framework of their new government. More than 200 years later, these words still hold a lesson for us. They are a vital reminder that perfection is an ever-evolving goal, one that the leaders of this country, our community, and our schools constantly strive to attain.

Three other words- “We the People”- serve as a reminder that it is the people- all of us- who must come together to achieve our shared goals. In Gwinnett County Public Schools, we are striving to become a system of world-class schools_a more perfect school district, if you will. This focus on improvement requires attention from every employee and stakeholder. Individually, each of us can make a difference, but working together we can achieve great things. E pluribus unum. Gwinnett Technical College

Career-education and training have been the hallmark of Gwinnett Technical College (GTC) for more than 30 years. From its campuses in Lawrenceville and nearby Alpharetta, as well as online, GTC offers more than 140 associate degree, diploma and certificate options in a very wide range of program areas – from healthcare to computer science. Programs are developed in concert with business and industry in the fastest growing fields, plus emerging industries and technologies, where employers need a highly skilled workforce and graduates are in demand. Gwinnett Tech accepts the HOPE Scholarship and Grant, making it an accessible and affordable higher ed option for students of all ages.

Saint Leo University

Founded in 1889, Saint Leo University is a leading Catholic teaching institution with its main campus in Florida. With multiple campus locations and more than 40 education centers, and online degree programs, St. Leo serves more than 13,000 students from all 50 states. Its Gwinnett Education Center is in Duluth and offers associate and bachelor’s degrees, plus three masters programs, in business administration, human services administration, and criminal justice. St. Leo has both on-campus class options in the evenings and on weekends, plus online and distance learning options.

Georgia Gwinnett College

Established in 2006 as the first four-year, public college created in the U.S. in the 21st century, Georgia Gwinnett College continues to make history. Georgia Gwinnett is the #10 top public school in the Southern region (U.S. News & World Report), the most ethnically diverse Southern regional college and ranks second in the Southern region for the lowest graduate debt.

The college’s growth in its first decade has been dramatic – enrollment now tops 12,000 students who can choose from 16 majors and more than 40 concentrations. However, average class size remains small, 21 students on average, the student to faculty ratio is 18:1.

Georgia Gwinnett celebrates its standing as a “different kind of four-year college” – with a strong mentoring program, a focus on technology, an incredibly diverse student body (100 nations and 30 states represented) and a mission to provide access to all students. The college has over 120 student organizations and a fast-growing athletic program that has already earned national and conference championships.

Gwinnett Campus

The University of Georgia-Gwinnett Campus serves the educational needs of working professionals and businesses from its Lawrenceville campus. The campus provides graduate-level programs in the professional-academic fields of pharmaceutical regulatory affairs, information technology, higher education, non-profit leadership, social work, public administration, sports management, and business. UGA faculty members teach programs from the school or college in which each program originates.

The UGA Gwinnett Campus offers evening and Saturday classes and a broad range of student support services. UGA-Gwinnett is a full-service campus; offering instructional and support space, including access to computer labs, library and study rooms, as well as student services.
