Five years ago Laverne Huggins had her very first mammogram at the age of 42 and learned she had cancer. Huggins is from Saint Kitts and Nevis (two-island country in the West Indies) and her family still lives there. She called her sister and asked her to tell her mother for her. I didnt want to transmit worry and fear to them, she said.
At first I was numb and I cried, then I prayed. I knew I couldnt worry about the cancer, that makes it worse. I believe 95% of your healing and recovery is based on your attitude.
I had a complete mastectomy and the cancer had not spread so I did not have to have radiation or chemo. I was relieved but I felt guilty.
The support group had suffered so much and experienced so much loss. I felt like I just got a slap on a wrist. My support group told me not to feel that way because having cancer is never the same for anyone.
