Innovating Change & Celebrating Tradition: Truett McConnell Marks 70th Anniversary With University Designation

Nearly seventy years after being chartered as Truett McConnell College, the institution graduated to the academic status of university this year – announcing the news at spring commencement and celebrating the first class to graduate under the new university title.

The change is just the latest in advancements and growth at Truett McConnell and will bring additional programs and possibilities to its students.

Located in northeast Georgia, Truett McConnell University (TMU) is a private Christian liberal arts and sciences school affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention. The university is dedicated to merging the finest liberal arts education with a Biblically-centered curriculum to meet the growing demands for Christian professionals.

University president Dr. Emir Caner says, “An education at Truett is not merely about the mind, it’s about the soul. Here our students become equipped to fulfill God’s highest calling on their lives.”

TMU offers a wide array of undergraduate programs including Biology, Business Administration, Christian Studies, Criminal Justice, Education, English, Exercise Science, History, Music, Nursing, Psychology and World Missions – with more planned.

Truett McConnell’s new university status has shaped a strategic plan that includes additional undergraduate programs as well as new graduate programs, adding to the current Master of Arts in Theology.  The additional graduate degree programs already approved by the faculty include Master of Science in Biology, Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts in Professional Counseling, Master of Arts in Missiology and Master of Education, all of which need approval by SACSCOS [Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges].

In addition to serving residential students, online students, and graduate students, TMU has the state’s largest number of dual enrolled high school students.

A World of Opportunities: On Campus and Beyond

With outdoor adventures in the north Georgia mountains, day trips into metro Atlanta, and on-campus activities ranging from intercollegiate sports to discipleship groups, Truett McConnell University students have access to experiences that both enrich and encourage.

Senior Atarah Campbell says, “After being at Truett for the past three years, I feel equipped to go out into the world. Being here has taught me more about God and about myself. I’ve learned how to be a leader and how to love people who come from different backgrounds.”

With a 15:1 student to facility ratio, Truett McConnell students get a personalized education along with tools to thrive academically, socially, and spiritually. Ministry initiatives combine with leadership development to build upon the Biblically-centered academic curriculum.

Truett McConnell is one of only a few universities to offer a World Missions degree, and many student choose mission trips and ministry work – here in the U.S. and globally – as an integral part of their education.
