Lanier Middle School students will roll up their sleeves and build an outdoor garden using among other things, recycled containers. The supplies for the project were funded by a Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) Bright Ideas grant.
Last fall, Jackson EMC awarded 36 local teachers from 24 schools with $50,608.31 in educational grants. Five Lanier Middle School teachers were awarded a total of nearly $7,400 to be used for different projects. The grants are funded through unclaimed capital credits. Through the Bright Ideas program, educators can earn up to $2,000 each for innovative classroom projects that would otherwise go unfunded. This program provides funds to state-certified educators in public middle schools in Jackson EMCÂ’s service area. A panel of outside judges evaluated the blind applications for innovation, implementation, objectives, student involvement, goals, and budgets.
