The Hudgens Center for the Arts will have a rare visit from one of the towering figures in the history of art this fall, hosting SORDID AND SACRED: THE BEGGARS IN REMBRANDT’S ETCHINGS – Selections from the Villarino Collection. The exhibition, on view from Oct. 8 Dec. 23, features 36 rare etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) executed between 1629 and 1648.
There will be a range of community programming planned around the exhibition, from free family days to group tours, all designed to provide visitors and art lovers varied and unique ways to experience this acclaimed collection. The exhibition will also provide the backdrop for the Hudgens Center for the Arts annual pARTy Fundraiser, held on Oct. 8, the exhibitions opening day.
Were so excited to introduce this rare and important collection to the community, said Ife Williams, executive director, Hudgens Center for the Arts. This is a remarkable body of work by the artist considered to be the master of the etching.
Rembrandt, a millers son from the university town of Leiden, was an artist of unmatched genius. Equally gifted as a painter, printmaker, and draftsman, Rembrandt proved himself to be as skillful at making portraits as he was at creating religious and mythological narratives. His landscapes are just as remarkable as his rare still lifes and subjects detailing everyday life.
Widely recognized as the greatest practitioner of the etching technique in the history of art, Rembrandt created 300 prints that constitute a body of work unparalleled in richness and beauty. Rembrandt repeatedly chose beggars as the subject for his etchings. Many of Rembrandt’s etchings sympathetically portray beggars as biblical figures. These etchings of beggars also played an essential role in Rembrandt’s formative years as an artist.
Admission for the exhibit will be: Adults – $5; Child/Student/Senior – $3; and children under 2, free; Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The Hudgens Center for the Arts is located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Bldg. 300, in Duluth, in the Infinite Energy Complex. The Hudgens Center for the Arts annual pARTy Fundraiser will be set amongst the works of the master this year, held on Oct. 8, from 7 10 pm, as the reception for the exhibit SORDID AND SACRED: THE BEGGARS IN REMBRANDTS ETCHINGS- Selections from the Villarino Collection.
