The military model is a ready-made system that fosters responsibility. For example, a cadet can be appointed to sergeant, lieutenant or captain. With each new rank comes a greater level of responsibility, thus instilling hands-on leadership skills.
The academy emphasizes having its cadets commit to moral, ethical and proper principles before graduation, so it’s in the fabric of everything they do. One way that they do this is by using an honor code.
The honor code is very straightforward and says that RMA cadets will not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do. It’s the exact same honor code in place at West Point and The Air Force Academy, and is used as the foundation to help build a cadet.
Being physically fit is another aspect of what shapes a young male. When 3:30 p.m. hits, it’s the end of the school day, but not the end of a cadets day. Every young man participates in some sort of physical activity, whether it’s a varsity sport or recreational fitness.
“If I had to use one word to describe this place, I would choose excellence,” Gallagher says. The people who work here give 100% on a daily basis. Average is not okay. We strive for excellence.”
