Business Goes Back to School

Junior Achievement Discovery Center at Discovery High is changing the way students learn about business. The center, a 45,000-square-foot facility, is the first of its kind to serve Gwinnett and instruct middle school students about the business and entrepreneurial world from both a classroom and experiential, hands-on setting. The center opened this fall and in just its first semester, GCPS, expects that it will have served 11.567 students.

The center includes an interactive marketplace representative of the local business community, including financial services, government, telecommunications, utilities, manufacturing, healthcare and more, all sponsored by community partners and area businesses such as Brand Bank, Chick-fil-A, and Assurant Inc. and scores more.

Alan Colberg, President and CEO of Assurant Inc. says, "As a sponsor, our employee volunteers mentor students and help them learn the basics of personal finance, how to budget for unexpected risks and ways to protect what matters most to them."

Already, more than 1,300 individuals have volunteered as facilitators and mentors. If you would like to volunteer yourself, send an email to to learn more.
