The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology boasts one of the biggest events for high schools in Gwinnett — International night.
At GSMST, International Night is a big deal. Junior Mckenzie Alverenga says, “Variety is the spice of life and on International Night, you can see a beautiful blend of all the cultures at our school in a melting pot.”
Although this celebration of the school’s diversity and minorities receives well-deserved media coverage, the week leading up to International night, International week, is often overlooked. Throughout the week, students represent their heritage and culture on the designated Day. Monday is North America Day. Tuesday is Latin America and the Caribbean Day, Wednesday is Europe Day, Thursday is Africa Day, and Friday boasts one of the largest participants with Asia Day.
Here is what’s involved:
- Monday- North America Day – Students wear North American clothing to represent their culture and listen to Canadian/American music during lunch. Many students decide to dance as well.
- Tuesday- Latin America/Caribbean Day – Songs in Spanish and other languages are played during lunch and students wear their flags around the school to represent and show some pride.
- Wednesday- Europe Day – Along with dressing in traditional clothing from countries all over Europe, students take pictures and listen to primarily German/French/British music.
- Thursday- Africa Day – The school is filled with bright colored clothing and hats for Africa Day. Songs from countries across Africa are played.
- Friday- Asia Day- It would be an understatement to say that more than 1/5 of all students dressed up for this Day. Along with students of Asian descent, other students joined in and wore their friends’ clothes. A flash mob occurred during the 2nd lunch and music was played until the next period!
