Gwinnett Magazine Heroes Project 2016: Tony Velo

“Trust God and live your life.”
– Tony Velo

TonyVirtually his entire life, Tony Velo has been dealing with neurofibromatosis— a type of cancer that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue throughout his body. First diagnosed at 14 months, the high school junior lives his life and doesn’t allow this pervasive form of cancer to hold him back.

Family, friends and music
get him through the difficult times. Tony says, “Life is hard sometimes. I remind myself that God is in control and I’m not in this alone.”

The inoperable tumors in Tony’s brain haven’t progressed since completing his fifth round of chemotherapy in October 2013. His vision is impaired, but holding stable. As a freshman, Tony transferred to Parkview High School to take advantage
of the extra assistance the school provides to students with vision problems.

We’ve been following Tony’s journey in our Heroes Project issue since 2010. It’s exciting to see Tony turn 18 and hear about his plans for a career as a radio disc jockey and producer.
