Kaiser Permanente Awards Gwinnett Tech $10,000 for Nursing Scholarship

Kaiser Permanente Gives has awarded Gwinnett Tech Foundation a $10,000 grant creating scholarships to assist nursing students with their education. Kaiser’s dedication to nursing and their generosity made it possible for Gwinnett Tech to award ten $1,000 scholarships to nursing students in the 2016-2017 year.

One of those students, Heidy Sosa, of Braselton, Georgia, says the Kaiser scholarship she received made it possible for her to move forward with her career. “Since I came to the U.S. six years ago from the Dominican Republic, I have been working hard to pursue my dreams. Without Kaiser’s gift, I would not have been able to continue my education. It has been a blessing for me and my family.”

Indira Tyler, PhD, RN, CNE, dean of nursing at Gwinnet Tech, underscores the connection between the Kaiser Permanente Gift and student success, saying “For Heidy and nursing students in similar situations, business and industry partners, like Kaiser, are essential to Gwinnett Tech remaining as one of the top nursing education programs in the area. We are grateful to Kaiser Permanente Gives for understanding the need for a gift that will have lasting impact for patients and families, as well as for future nurses.”

Partnerships are important to Kaiser Permanente, too. “With the help of partners such as Gwinnett Tech, we are investing in students, advancing the practice of registered nursing and, in turn, advancing the health of our communities,” says Gloria Kemp, community benefit grants manager at Kaiser Permanente. Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to nursing at Gwinnett Tech began with an initial gift of $15,000 to focus on nursing student recruitment and retention. To date, Kaiser Permanente has awarded Gwinnett Tech $25,000 to assist nursing students with tuition.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts a 16% job growth for registered nurses from 2014 – 2024. Graduates of Gwinnett Tech’s Registered Nursing program enjoy careers in hospitals, outpatient clinics and within physician groups. Gwinnett Tech’s Registered Nursing program has a 91% pass rate on the National Certification Exam over the last four years.
