Have you been falling asleep during your favorite shows? Do you wake up with pounding headaches? Have you been having a hard time exercising and been putting on extra, unwanted weight?
Let’s talk! Your dentists at Suwanee Dental Care are concerned with more than just your pearly whites. We’re here to help you with your overall health too! By now we all know about the strong connection between our overall health and oral health, but did you know that sleep deprivation is a root cause of a slew of health conditions? Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and heart problems can be triggered and get worse if your body is struggling to get oxygen.
- The doctors at Suwanee Dental Care are here to help. Drs. Kremer, Majdi, Schalk and Williams are highly trained in detecting signs of sleep apnea and helping you navigate your treatment. From our first exam we consider worn dentition, which can be a sign of stress and anxiety that causes people to grind their teeth. We also take into consideration neck size and angulation, tongue size and obstruction of the throat, along with resting oxygen levels that all tell a story about possible risks for obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Kremer says “Once we have all the data, we guide you to talk to your physician, or recommend some if you don’t have a sleep specialist, to get tested and get a prescription for your next step.”
- Sleep Appliance Therapy Dr. Williams has been helping his patients for decades and likes to mention that “dentists can help you with your sleep quality with a mandibular advancement device which looks like a sports mouth guard specially made for you to open your airway.” This is an alternative to options such as surgery or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines. Though the CPAP is the gold standard, it may not be a viable option for every patient. For those that have mild to moderate sleep apnea in fact, an oral appliance has been proven to work as well as the CPAP. For those that cannot tolerate the CPAP, having the oral appliance can be a life saver.
- A Life Saver At Suwanee Dental Care, we have patients that ask us for help with proper sleep after having cardiac artery stents placed or having a cardiac episode. But you can help avoid such devastating events if you are diagnosed and treated soon! If you think you might be suffering from sleep disordered breathing, or have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, don’t hesitate to come see your favorite dentist at Suwanee Dental Care.
