When students enter the halls of North Gwinnett High School, they are instilled with a belief that has made its mark on every club at the school – every student can be a leader. And at North Gwinnett, no other club represents this ideal more than the school’s Beta Club, which encourages its high-achieving members to have a passion for serving their school and community.
On Friday, September 15, 2017, Beta hosted its annual event, Encore, a three-hour, music-themed event that gave students community service opportunities such as making bracelets for hospitalized children and painting motivational quotes and images on canvas boards for new and returning teachers. Students were also given the opportunity to bond with their friends and other Beta members through relay and hand-patting games, while also giving student officers suggestions on how to improve Beta for the upcoming year. These events culminated into an on-theme set list, which named the events by spoofing popular musical artists and bands, such as 21 Volunteers (Twenty-One Pilots) and Red Hot Beta Points (Red Hot Chili Peppers).
Encore ended with student performances, and students clapped, gave standing ovations, and yelled out their friends’ names as students sang or played band instruments as loud as they could. Hurricane Irma disrupted the school schedule this week, but it couldn’t hurt North Gwinnett’s school pride. As the curtains closed on another successful Beta event, students left with a fun memory and the knowledge that they had just served their community one more time.
